F%^& yeah!
i’ve burnt myself out again.
i get these weird spikes of energy that last a few weeks. i have limitless energy and i just jump into all of my interests, researching them until late at night, musing and practicing all of my hobbies and i forget to just stop and relax. i just burn myself out. Then i get sort of depressive for a while and i don’t do anything. That’s what’s happened now. i’m in zombie mode.
better remember this next time i get an energy spike.. thing
ambedo n. a kind of melacholic trance in which you become completely absorbed in vivid sensory details—raindrops skittering down a window, tall trees leaning in the wind, clouds of cream swirling in your coffee—which leads to a dawning awareness of the haunting fragility of life

in Visual culture class we were taught about Leonardo da Vinci and other artists of the High renaissance and one of the things that struck me was that they all obsessed over something, they obsessed over it until they fully understood it and perfected it in their artworks. Da Vinci was obsessed with nature and the mechanics of it. The human body was a type of machine and he wanted to know exactly how it worked so he studied anatomy and his understanding of the human form had a great impact on the quality of his paintings. Other artists obsessed over lighting or depth or whatever it was. I think it was Titian who took old ideas of painting, all the stuff that people had already discovered, only he didn’t think they were quite right just yet so he worked at them until they were perfected.
I think most people have something they’re obsessed with and for artists it’s important. I want to be a filmmaker so i think i’ll have to identify the things i’m obsessed with. I think once you have very clear obsessions they’ll take hold of you until you figure them out and you’ll use your medium, whatever it is, to do so. One obsession of mine is: What makes people the way they are? all of their little quirks and irrational fears come from somewhere, most things about their personality stem from things that occurred in their earlier childhood and that’s a concept that drives me nuts. I want to know what happened and how a little, ordinary event can shape a person.
I’ve been wondering what it is that makes people the way they are.
I’ve wondered what makes people listen to the shitty music on the radio when there’s other amazing music out there. I also wondered what makes people choose to join the religion of their parents without ever considering other possibilities. I used to think people did these things because they were stupid but that’s a very weak opinion. I think people just do whatever is easy.
Going on with the religion you were born into is much easier than considering other options and much easier than renouncing your faith. listening to whatever music is on the radio is much easier than trying to find great music on your own. Humans naturally seek out the path of least resistance. It takes a good nudge from somebody to show you that there’s other stuff out there.
Sarcasm sucks!
Because of sarcasm i can’t say “that’s nice” without sounding condescending. So to whoever invented sarcasm and all those keeping it alive; thanks a lot! (i mean that sarcastically… yes i see the irony)
I sometimes get the feeling that music doesn’t mean that much to people. I feel like music has become disposable to people. Listening to music, for me, is a personal and intimate experience. I feel connected to the artists and feel like i get to know some essential part of them and I’d REALLY like it if i didn’t feel like i was the only one who experienced music this way.
“You know, I spent years of my life listening to Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” when I was however old I was, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, whatever. I didn’t have access to that much music. Music was an investment. If I spent eight, ten dollars on an album I was gonna listen to it even if it sucked. I was going to listen it until I liked it, you know? I read the liner notes, I read the etching on the vinyl, on the inside ring. I lived with that material, it became part of me. And I don’t mean just that, but the consumption of music was different.
Today, where you’ve got an iPod that’s filled with music you didn’t pay for, and everybody’s… it’s just a different consumption model, between youtube and the internet and people sharing files. Competition for your attention; people spend less time with music.”
